Help for Kigers and owners in trouble
Kiger Crisis Intervention - Surrender Program
Horses come to Kiger Refuge from many different sources and for many different reasons; however, a large number of our horses are owner surrenders. The owners of these horses can no longer care for them. Surrendering your horse can be a very difficult decision to make, and we respect that. We are happy to answer questions you may have to help you make an informed decision.
If you have decided you need to surrender you horse:
The first step in the surrender process is to complete and submit a surrender application. Once we receive your application, we will contact you regarding our current space and your financial requirements.

You may submit your completed Surrender Application (PDF) via:
US Post: Kiger Mustang Refuge, Inc
2909 Cambell Avenue #402
Tucson, AZ 85719
If we agree to accept your horse the following information/documentation must be provided:
Completed Surrender Application
Current Proof of Negative Coggins Test
Proof of valid Kiger linage
Brand Certificate transferring ownership to Kiger Mustang Refuge, Inc.
Horses registration paperwork (if applicable)
We can only accept horses that can be verified as authentic Kiger mustangs. This means only those horses that come from, or whose ancestors come from the Kiger or Riddle Herd Management Areas of Southeastern Oregon. These are the only two Herd Management Areas set aside by the government for the perpetuation of the Kiger Mustang.
Applications to Kiger Refuge for owner surrenders are always accepted. However, it is important to understand that Kiger Refuge may not be able to accept your horse immediately, if ever.
We evaluate each surrender application based on our available space and the level of need for each applicant.
